Bak Chang ~ Glutinous Rice Dumplings

Bak Chang - a lovely savory dumpling made from glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves with a wide selection of fillings or stuffings.
Bak Chang or ZongZi (粽子) is traditionally eaten during the DuanWu (端午节) or Dragon Boat Festival which falls on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Chinese calendar.
It is a festival to commemorate the death of a poet of Royal descent by the name of QuanYu (屈原) who opposed the conquering of the Qin Kingdom (秦国) of his homeland capital of Chu Kingdom (楚国). The patriotic poet drowns himself on the Miluo River and the local people who respected the patriotic poet threw lumps of rice into the river to prevent the fishes to eat the poet. It was also said that the Dragon Boat race was also born from this legend where the locals rowed boats and made loud noises with drums to scare away the fishes.
Anyways, enough said about the story or legend of DuanWu, lets get to to yummy part of this festival! The Bak Chang or ZongZi!

Have I ever mentioned that I am Crazy over glutinous rice?
I absolutely love glutinous rice ~ sweet or savory.
Its an amazing type of short-grained Asian rice which is sticky when cooked.
Read more on Glutinous rice from wikipedia!

Nowadays, there are plenty of varieties of bak chang available in restaurants stuffed with 'expensive' ingredients i.e. abalone, etc but I prefer the simple homestyle ones stuffed with green beans (luk dao), sliver of chinese mushroom, pork belly slice, salted egg yolk and chestnuts.
Its amazing how the flavor of all those ingredients mixed with soy sauce and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves can be sooo addictive. I can never get enough of the lovely aroma of a fresh steamed or boiled bak chang and even more so the fantastic savory taste of it!!

Oh… I have a tendency to eat my bak chang(s) with a dash of light soy sauce and a sprinkle of sugar… weird? Absolutely not! It totally enhances the savory taste of the bak chang, serious!! Give it a try next time you eat your favorite bak chang.

In the mean time, enjoy eating your bak chang(s) if you have not already finish them all!

Mango Sticky Rice ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง

I love Mango
 I love glutinous rice
  I love coconut cream
I love the combination of these 3 things!
Mango Sticky Rice ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง

I tried making this lovely dessert at home since I just could not get over the yummy-licious-ness of this favorite Thai dessert!
I checked over the net for sticky rice recipe and found that it wasn't that difficult to make - steam the glutinous rice, make the coconut sauce and just slice up the mango to serve…
I tried and it turn out quite OK, just a little short on the rice ~ the rice needs to be steamed a wee bit longer for a softer texture. The coconut cream was a bit salt-ish ~ I reduced the amount of sugar and hence the salt slightly over powered the sweetness of the coconut cream…
I bought some Thai mango from the supermarket but it just wasn't the full thick flesh, juicy super sweet mango that I had in Bangkok!
So, verdict? It was nice but it could be better once I get the steam time and taste right with the right type of mango…
Ok lah, I was quite satisfied with my home made sticky rice and store bought mango!

Moo Cow Frozen Yoghurt

Yumms! I get tempted with these 2 words : Frozen Yoghurt

I was at Gardens Mall, MidValley two days ago to watch a movie and I found Moo Cow Frozen Yoghurt open. I saw their signage a couple of weeks ago and I was waiting for it to open to try their frozen yoghurt. Although I actually already had my dessert earlier, I could not resist the temptation to try. The staff at the outlet on 3rd floor Gardens Mall, immediately gave me 2 different flavors to sample when I walked towards the outlet. They let me try the Wheatgrass and RootBeer flavor which are their current seasonal flavor. Yes, that green chlorophyll plant and yes, that fizzy drink rootbeer.
Wow! Their frozen yoghurt is super smooth and super creamy. I was initially a little sceptical of the wheatgrass flavor as I am no greeny chlorophyll person. But I was quite surprised! It taste quite good. The rootbeer taste exactly like the fizzy drink but I personally thought that it was a bit strange to be eating it as yoghurt. Not that it doesn't taste good it just doesn't fit…
I finally decided to just have the plain natural yoghurt flavor - back to basic and its always the best! I like their rich yoghurt flavor and lovely ultra smooth and creamy texture.
The plain natural flavor yoghurt is priced at MYR 9.90 per cup. While the flavored yoghurt are priced at MYR 10.90. There is only 1 size cup unlike Tutti Frutti which charges by weight.
I am definitely coming back for more!

it was so yummy that i've finished everything

Jonker Sweets Desserts @ Gardens Mall, MidValley

I am a total dessert person! I cannot resist any sweet temptations…

My girlfriend introduced to me Jonker Sweets Dessert stall some time ago and I have been hooked since. The stall is located at Lower Ground floor, Gardens Mall.
It has my all time favorite tong sui - black glutinous rice or hak lo mai.
They also have a variety of other tong sui, ice kacang and fruit lolo (ice shavings topped with fresh fruits and sago).
Tong sui is priced at MYR 3.30 a bowl. Fruit lolo starts from MYR 6.50 onwards and they have a few varieties to choose from. I would say that the price is decent for the serving size and in a shopping mall.
I do try to make it for some desserts here at Jonker Sweets every time I am at Gardens Mall.

Buffet @ Halia, SimeDarby Convention Centre

I have been to Halia @ SimeDarby Convention Centre quite a few times.
I like this place and I do recommend you all to go and try it!
The restaurant on the 1st floor of SimeDarby Convention Centre.
It's quite cozy and does not have the usual packed crowd as in other fancy hotels around town. The main theme for Halia's buffet spread is Malay cuisine. And I must say that their Malay cuisine is really quite delectable.

Local & Western Desserts

Salad & Appetizer Counter

Bread Counter

The many selections of Main Meals

The Satay served here is very Tasty!

The Condiments & Fruits Counter - they have a range of keropok / local crackers

Coffee is self-serve from the coffee machine

Weekend Hi-Tea includes ABC / Shaved ice with plenty of sweet condiments and syrup to choose!

I had their Weekend Hi-Tea buffet earlier today and I find myself very satisfied with the meal. The weekend Hi-Tea is served every weekend and public holiday and seating starts from 12 - 4pm. Price is MYR 45++ for adults.
Halia also have standard lunch and dinner buffet as well during weekdays. They have different themes and specials from time to time, so do give them a call to check what are the offers for the week.
Currently they have 15% discounts applicable to HSBC and StanChart card holders.

And oh! did i mention that car park is free??
Make a date with Halia the next time you crave for some local Malay cuisine.

Consider Buffet

 "What to eat?"
"Anything la… what you want to eat?"
 "Anything also can…"

Don't you think this scenario is familiar? I am quite sure that happens quite often… right? Or am I the only one here??
Its probably more mind boggling when I person wants chinese and the other is having a craving for some curry…

So what is the solution? My best answer to this ever existing question is buffet.
Ample variety for you to choose and it has the whole meal course covered from salads / starters to soups and breads and main course(s) and you get to have your choice of desserts and coffee or tea to round up your meal. Isn't that lovely?

So, the next time you have a problem deciding what to eat or having contradicting food options with your spouse or friends… go eat buffet.

And I also think that buffet is great for get together with friends and family.
hmmm… looks like I'm gonna be organizing the next get together with my friends at a buffet place! Oh! I can't wait!

Bangkok Food Trip - May 2011

Bangkok - the 1st thing that comes to my mind is the food… hehe… quite obvious lah…

I haven't been to Bangkok for ages. This time around, I joined my 2 girlfriends for a weekend get-a-way. I'm not sure if I was really joining them per se… well, you see, my 2 girl friends' agenda was SHOPPING!! while my agenda was FOOD…
Anyways, I just tag along with them…

We took an early flight out of KLIA. We were all barely awake during the taxi ride to KLIA at 0530 hrs nor were we totally awake during check in!! At least we got some shut eye time on board the plane.

Sawadee-ka Bangkok!

My food trip started with a hot hearty bowl of pork ball noodles at Chatuchak market. It was a welcoming meal for me! I realized that I missed the savory broth which is quite unique in Thailand and not found here in Malaysia. My other friends opted for yellow noodles with crispy pork and while we were happy slurping away our noodles.. we got a little greedy and decided to order a separate serving of crispy pork. The pork was sliced thinly and it was OK to eat on its own - just a tad too bland for my palate. But, their brown sauce - akin to our local lobak sauce is very tasty and complements the crispy pork well. 200 THB for 4 bowls of noodles + a plate of crispy pork.

Being a foodie, I checked out some food places to visit while in Bangkok and I came across Somboon Seafood Restaurant from the internet. And so I googled about the restaurant and found that there was one close to where we were staying. OK lah! We are set for seafood dinner!
We did not make any reservations for Saturday night dinner but we managed to get seated quickly despite the crowd - it was packed with locals & tourists. We ordered their house specialty - Fried Curry Crab and 4 other dishes - tom yum khung, braised pig trotter, grilled squid and a plate of vege.
1st came the tom yum kung and it did not fare well with my travel mates. It was the local thai style which is really sour - they like used a ton of lime juice! The compliment was that it was a real appetizer - literally!
Next was the grilled squid - which was OK nothing much to shout. Only thing was that the dipping sauce for the grilled squid came like when more than half of it was gone!
Then came the fried curry crab. We only ordered a small serving of 1 medium sized crab. The sauce was amazing. Plenty of fried shallots - giving it its aromatic flavor and the curry powder used was quite subtle and did not over power the fragrant fried shallots. The sauce is finished with some egg whites and coconut cream giving it its rich texture and flavor. The only disappointment was the crab itself - it was small and not "meaty" enough. We being Malaysians, asked the waiter for some bread to mop up the sauce but alas! they don't serve bread...
The last dish to be served is the braised pig trotter - which has a nice flavor and braised well.
The meal costs around 1,400 THB including a big bottle of Singha beer, an orange juice + a pot of "can't-seem-to-finish" chrysanthemum tea.

Mango Sticky rice! I fell heads over heals for this awesome dessert! Sweet Thai mango and savory sticky rice in coconut cream… delicious!! I stumbled upon this wonderful little corner dessert shop selling this fantastic thai dessert!
The shop is a little corner lot just on the next street to the hotel where we are staying - within Siam Square. Shop name is : Mango Tango. They serve all things mango from mango lassi to mango sticky rice to dried mango. I liked their signature Mango Tango + sticky rice. It a plate consisting of half a sliced mango, a scoop of mango sorbet, mango pudding and of course the delectable sticky rice! Its relatively pricey @ 145 THB! Another favorite was Mango Aloha @ 65 THB - mango cubes + sago + mango puree in a bowl of soya milk. Their mango lassi was also lovely - thick & loaded with mango! I patronized this shop everyday for 3 days while I was in Bangkok!

Siam Paragon Food Hall - this place is aplenty with food stalls. You can find almost all the various thai staples at this place. There is also another section which sells all sorts of finger foods from crispy pancake to grilled sausages. This place is recommended for you if you like to sample Thai street food at an air conditioned and comfortable environment. I personally liked this place.
I had a bowl of beef brisket noodles - the broth was flavorful. Yummy! Also had a plated of braised pork knuckles - they indeed make very well braised meat, sauce was tasty and meat was tender. For dessert it was a bowl of thai shaved ice with condiments - water chestnuts, jackfruit & jelly. And of course, the mango sticky rice! The desserts was so-so, I did not really like the syrup used in the shaved ice and the sticky rice was not as good as the one served at the Mango Tango dessert shop! I also bought some crispy sweet pancakes with shredded coconut. Price ranges from 80 THB onwards for a bowl of noodles.

Snack time! Street snacks are oh so tempting while you are in Bangkok and they are so irresistible! I did not manage to sample many street food as I was perpetually full from all my main meals! But I did manage to try some pancake (this time its the fluffy soft pancake) which comes with different fillings - pandan custard (or more commonly known as kaya for us Malaysians), yam and sausage (yes! sweet pancake with sausages!).

On my last day in Bangkok, I had some nice Thai food at Ban Khun Mae Restaurant. We ordered a sample platter of small dishes which included fish cakes, shrimp spring rolls, kangkung, thai red curry, stir fry beef with ginger & spring onions and sliced grilled pork. We also ordered a glass noodles with prawns and a plate of deep fried salted chicken. The dishes was tasty and we finished every morsel of it! I completed my meal with mango sticky rice (obviously!!) and a bowl of crunchy water chestnut in sweet coconut milk. The mango was really sweet and goes well with the slightly savory sticky rice! All those food cost me around 1,300 THB It was a wonderful meal… what an end to my food trip to Bangkok! S-A-T-I-S-F-I-E-D!!

So what's my take at the end of my Bangkok food trip? I had some wonderful food, though some are not so wonderful but I truly enjoyed the trip. It was fun and filling!!
